چکیده

Saccharum spp. (Sugarcane) is an important cash crop cultivated in tropical and subtropical regions of the world. It is valuable mainly because of its ability to store high concentrations of sucrose, or sugar, in the stem and more recently for the production of ethanol, which is an important renewable biofuel source [1,2]. Globally, sugarcane is an important source of commercial sugar accounting for almost twothirds of world sugar production [1]. Brazil is the largest sugarcane producer, contributing with 40% of the world production, followed by India, China, Thailand, Pakistan, Mexico, Philippines, United States, Australia and Argentina [3]. The list of top ten sugarcane producing countries with their estimated sugarcane production in the year 2011 is listed in Table 1.

Potentiality of Native Pseudomonas spp. in Promoting Sugarcane Seedling Growth and Red Rot (Colletotrichum falcatum went) Management

Sugarcane is an important cash crop grown in tropical and sub-tropical regions of the world. India is the second largest producer of sugar after Brazil and accounts for 16 per cent of world production (GOI, 2015). In Andhra Pradesh, sugarcane is grown in 1.39 lakh hectares with a production of 99.8 lakh tones. However, the sugarcane productivity (71 tonnes/ha) is very low compared to states lik...

Use of simple sequence repeat markers for DNA fingerprinting and diversity analysis of sugarcane (Saccharum spp) cultivars resistant and susceptible to red rot.

Red rod is an economically important disease of sugarcane caused by the fungus Colletotrichum falcatum. We used a simple sequence repeat (SSR)-based marker system to identify and analyze genetic relationships of red rot resistant and susceptible sugarcane cultivars grown in Pakistan. Twenty-one highly polymorphic SSR markers were used for DNA fingerprinting and genetic diversity analysis o...

Characterization of Resistance Gene Analog Polymorphisms in sugarcane cultivars with varying levels of red rot resistance

Resistance Gene Analog (RGA) strategy is being exploited perfectly for the identification, tagging and mapping of major genes or Quantitative Trait Loci for disease resistance. About 29 RGA primers designed from the conserved domains of resistance proteins, were used to analyse the genetic diversity among the 40 sugarcane cultivars that vary in their resistance to red rot disease. The genetic s...

Screening of New Sugarcane Genotypes for Resistance to Red Rot (glomerella Tucumanensis)

Preliminary investigations in South Africa into determining the resistance of sugarcane varieties to red rot (Glomerella tucumanensis) by means of an inoculation procedure, conducted in 1988-89, showed promise. Results of these trials, together with findings from industry-wide red rot surveys in the late 1980s, were used to provide a preliminary ranking of a number of released varieties. Variet...

Red rot resistant transgenic sugarcane developed through expression of β-1,3-glucanase gene

Sugarcane (Saccharum spp.) is a commercially important crop, vulnerable to fungal disease red rot caused by Colletotrichum falcatum Went. The pathogen attacks sucrose accumulating parenchyma cells of cane stalk leading to severe losses in cane yield and sugar recovery. We report development of red rot resistant transgenic sugarcane through expression of β-1,3-glucanase gene from Trichoderma spp...
